suddenly this is happening. All of my Windows 7 machines can view pdf but all of the 8.1 and 10 machines can't. I checked default programs, they are correct. I tried "unchecking" the box for enhanced security but that didn't help either.

Hello Laurae,

We're sorry for the trouble you had while opening the PDF files, make sure that you have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed on the machine, check for any pending updates of Adobe Reader from help>check for updates, reboot the machine after updating Adobe Reader to the latest version 2018.011.20063.

Open few files with Adobe Reader, go to Window -> Cascade -> Tile and see if that brings up the PDFs. You may also refer and try the suggestions from the following help article Can't open PDF

What is the dot version of Adobe Reader installed on both the OS? To identify, refer to Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Are you not able to open all the PDF files or any specific PDF file? Are you getting any error code or message while opening the files?

If the issue persists after updating Adobe Reader, please use Acrobat cleaner tool to remove Adobe Reader Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

Reboot the machine and install Adobe Reader from Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

let us know how it goes and share your observation.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

Thank you so much for your answer. Since I was unable to even open the program, I uninstalled and reinstalled, then went to the enhanced security and unchecked Enable Protected Mode and startup.

Hi Laurae,

Thank you for sharing the details and nice job troubleshooting that. Just to confirm, are you still facing any issue or unchecking the Protected mode at startup has fixed the issue?

Regards,

Anand Sri.
