Question

Poor Scrolling Performance

Acrobat Reader's scrolling performance is very bad when viewing my banks statements AND Protected Mode is enabled. I would expect the scrolling performance to be better with Protected Mode enabled since it disables various features. However, as soon as I "Enable All Features" (i.e. disable Protected Mode) the scrolling performance is good. Is this a bug?

To clarify, when I say scrolling performance is bad the document is jerky and there is "tearing" of the document as it moves.  This is repeatable and happens with various documents.

I am using Windows 11 Enterprise, 16 GB RAM, SSD, Core-i5 13th Generation.

Hi @defaultxpi738jqyjel,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for your experience with Acrobat Reader.

Do you experience the same issue when viewing normal documents too? This could be with the way the bank statements are created.

We would need more information to investigate further. A screen recording of the situation would be great to understand.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Souvik,

I have identified the only common denominator as PDF documents that have the "Mark-of-the-Web" property set. See below example properties. Windows flags files that have been downloaded from the internet (not intranet) as unsafe. One can manually unblock such files by editing the properties in Explorer.  If I open a PDF with the flag still set I see the protected view warning in Adobe Reader.  If I first "unblock" the file and then open the PDF, the protected view warning is gone.  It is only when the protected view warning is displayed that the scrolling speed is terrible/jumpy.  I have tested this with product manuals, bank statements, developer manuals etc. and they all behave the same.  For some reason Adobe Reader is mishandling files that are still "unsafe".

@defaultxpi738jqyjel,

Thank you for bringing this up.

In cases where the option is checked, Windows Defender blocks most functions for such files and allows them to open in safe mode.

Disabling this option with a security warning is not recommended in most cases, as it reduces your computer's security.

Hope this clarifies your point.
