Problems opening corrupt pdf document

Hello,

I have user that just got restored their hardrive, and now no pdf documents are currently working.

On some of the pdfs it gets this error message: "there was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.".

also this one: there was an error processing a page. There was a problem reading this document (109).

The pdfs are only 10-50 kb large, so I guess they are missing some info.

Does anyone have any quick tips on fixing broken pdfs?

FYI, this has nothing to do with the pdf client, or my pc/our user pc, so please do not suggest a reinstall of adobe reader:-)

If they are missing information (used to be larger) then I'm afraid that you are out of luck unless you have backups. I'm assuming these pdf's were on the machine before the hard drive was restored?

You can open one in a text editor and look at the first few lines of code. Copy/paste them here.

Thanks for answering.

Yes, thats correct, they were fully functional before we did restore.

I`ll do the same as I did on the excel/word files:

Try to exctract them, and open the document.html with notepad++.

Unfortunately, after doing so with over 100-200 files, only 1% got some info back.

It`s a lost cause I suppose...

It looks like they are still recognized as pdf files but they still may be missing too much info to save them. There are tools you can Google that say they can fix pdf files but I can't vouch for any. At least I've never found one that actually worked in any extreme case of corruption.

No, unfortunately not. Someone deleted the windows profile, and everything got deleted. We used a 3 party that restored it, but almost everything was cryptic and doesnt work..
