RdrCEF.exe crashes, memory leak

A user I support has Adobe Reader DC 15.023.20056.  I have cleanly reinstalled the product and rebooted the machine twice.

Windows 7 x64 (6.1.7601 Service Pack 1), 8GB RAM.

If the RdrCEF.exe process is not already running, it consistently crashes upon opening a PDF in Reader and then displays a significant memory leak (have seen it use up to 2GB of memory at about 25% CPU).

Tried disabling Vipre AV (Windows firewall already turned off)

Ran sfc /scannow, no integrity violations

Based on Re: RdrCEF.exe Application error when opening Reader I have obtained a dump and log file for you.  Please let me know where to send.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryanlink615,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

I would request/recommend to always keep the application updated via Help->Check for updates... as we keep improving the product. Once you are at latest version of Reader DC, Please share the following information if issue still persist :

  • Platform/OS information
  • Application version information
  • Exact steps to reproduce the issue and screen shot of the error
  • Screenshot of the Task manager shown AcroRd32 and RdrCEF processes.
  • Download Shared Files - Acrobat.com  and share the memory dump file of crashing process RdrCEF.exe

Please keep us updated with the result.

-Thanks

Hi ryanlink615,

Could you please below mentioned steps and see if that helps:

1- Run as administrator- locate Reader's shortcut on desktop>right click>Run as administrator>try to open any pdf file in Reader

2- If running Reader as an administrator doesn't work, try disabling Protected Mode in Reader- launch Reader>click Edit>Preferences>Security(Enhanced)uncheck the box Enable Protected Mode at startup>OK>Relaunch Reader

Please note: Disabling Protected Mode is for troubleshooting purpose only, and not recommended. Please turn the feature back on after troubleshooting is complete.

Have you tried launching Reader without any pdf?

Hi adorobat,

I have tried both of those already, and "Run as a different user" as the domain administrator.  Same behavior in all situations.

The Reader program itself does not crash when open by itself.  It only crashes when opening a pdf.

Please advise.
