RdrCEF.exe crashes, memory leak

A user I support has Adobe Reader DC 15.023.20056.  I have cleanly reinstalled the product and rebooted the machine twice.

Windows 7 x64 (6.1.7601 Service Pack 1), 8GB RAM.

If the RdrCEF.exe process is not already running, it consistently crashes upon opening a PDF in Reader and then displays a significant memory leak (have seen it use up to 2GB of memory at about 25% CPU).

Tried disabling Vipre AV (Windows firewall already turned off)

Ran sfc /scannow, no integrity violations

Based on Re: RdrCEF.exe Application error when opening Reader I have obtained a dump and log file for you.  Please let me know where to send.

Hi ryanlink615,

Could you please below mentioned steps and see if that helps:

1- Run as administrator- locate Reader's shortcut on desktop>right click>Run as administrator>try to open any pdf file in Reader

2- If running Reader as an administrator doesn't work, try disabling Protected Mode in Reader- launch Reader>click Edit>Preferences>Security(Enhanced)uncheck the box Enable Protected Mode at startup>OK>Relaunch Reader

Please note: Disabling Protected Mode is for troubleshooting purpose only, and not recommended. Please turn the feature back on after troubleshooting is complete.

Have you tried launching Reader without any pdf?

Hi adorobat,

I have tried both of those already, and "Run as a different user" as the domain administrator.  Same behavior in all situations.

The Reader program itself does not crash when open by itself.  It only crashes when opening a pdf.

Please advise.

Hi ryanlink615,

Could you please check if compatibility mode is set under Properties:

Locate Reader's shortcut on desktop>right click>Properties>Compatibility tab>Compatibility mode.

Check if the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode is checked, if it is, close Reader first, then uncheck the box>click Apply>OK, relaunch Reader and try to open a pdf.

Adorobat -

I will try this, but I think I already have.  In the meantime, is there somewhere you would like me to send the log file and crash dump I obtained?

I set both AcroRd32.exe and RdrCEF.exe to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode.  Same issue.

Also, RdrCEF.exe is crashing immediately (but continuing to run with a memory leak) when I open Reader, not just when I open a PDF.

I also tried renaming RdrCEF.exe and RdrServicesUpdater.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroCEF.

The files were recreated when I ran Reader again, and exactly the same crash occurred.

Please advise where you would like me to send log file and crash dump.

Hi ryanlink615,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Please follow below mentioned steps for sending the link for the log files:

Visit this link: https://cloud.acrobat.com/send ,(login if required) click Add Files>Choose Files from My Computer>select the log files>click Create Link ,

Once the link is created, copy the link and share it via private message.

To send a private message, hover the mouse over a person's name and then click Message.

In the meantime, could you please try restoring preferences for Reader and see if that resolves the issue.

Follow below mentioned steps:

Close Acrobat Reader

(ii) Go to C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\DC,

(iii) Move the entire DC folder to some other location like temp folder.

To view temp folder, press and hold Windows key and press R on your keyboard, type temp in the run dialogue box then press enter

If App data folder is not visible under your user name, type %appdata% in run dialogue box and hit enter

(iv) Relaunch Adobe Reader

Hi Ryanlink615,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

I would request/recommend to always keep the application updated via Help->Check for updates... as we keep improving the product. Once you are at latest version of Reader DC, Please share the following information if issue still persist :

  • Platform/OS information
  • Application version information
  • Exact steps to reproduce the issue and screen shot of the error
  • Screenshot of the Task manager shown AcroRd32 and RdrCEF processes.
  • Download Shared Files - Acrobat.com  and share the memory dump file of crashing process RdrCEF.exe

Please keep us updated with the result.

-Thanks
