Reader Install fails with Error 1721

Updates to Reader have been failing for about 2 months. Today I uninstalled Reader and tried to reinstall it per the instructions on the Troubleshooting page. On the first attempt thru Firefox it appeared to be 99% complete then failed with an error message "Newer Version already installed".

I tried closing my browser and launching the installer directly. This time it appeared to successfully install Reader and progressed thru the Optimizing Performance and Publishing Product Info stages but stopped with error 1721 When MSI tries to launch RdrServicesUpdater. Event Viewer shows - Action: InstallWebResources, location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroCEF\RdrServicesUpdater.exe, command: 19.012.20034

Searching my hard drive for RdrServicesUpdater shows a "RdrServicesUpdater2_1901020100.exe" at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\ARM\{291AA914-A987-4CE9-BD63-AC0A92D435E5} installed about 2 months ago about the time my problems started.

Is there a way for me to install Reader without trying to launch the RdrServicesUpdater or somehow direct the installer to use RdrServicesUpdater2_1901020100.exe if that is a viable option?

(By the way I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with Firefox 67.0)

Update: So I restored my System back to when I had the older version installed, Ran the C++ update as described in the almost identical thread on this site about error #1722 (got a message the update already was installed), manually swapped the msvcr120.dll and msvcp120.dll files (per Option 3) and then retried the Reader update with the same result as above, the first time it said "newer version installed" and undid the update. Then I ran the install locally and again it stopped after optimization and publishing the program info with the #1721 error. This time I just killed the installer and MSI processes while it was waiting for me to acknowledge the error and before it could revert the update, which left me with the newer version by the brute force method.

It is unfortunate that the installer is written to undo a viable update just because it can't confirm that it is the latest version with the local updater.

Waiting for a more elegant solution, but in the meantime I guess I've got a workaround to manually update Reader....

Hi Anand,

The solutions in your link apply to Vista and XP. As my original message indicated, I am running Windows 7.

I believe my problem may be the result of a System Accounts permissions bug in Windows 7. I found a work around method on the Microsoft  Community Forum, but it is complex and detailed so I am waiting until I have time to implement it.

In the meantime, I will continue to update Adobe Reader thru the inelegant "brute force" method of crashing the installer process when it gives the error message, and before it undoes the perfectly good installed update.

Hello ReaderUser,

Thank you for sharing the details and sorry for the delayed response, this issue was originally seen in Windows 7 machine where the Microsoft C runtime update was conflicting with the Adobe Reader's file and due to which you get the error code 1721.

The following help article and Adobe discussion is for Windows 7 machine and not for Windows XP or Vista.

Newer version already installed

The other Adobe discussion does share the steps to fix the issue for Windows XP and Vista operating system, however, the steps to enable the hidden admin account or provide admin rights to Adobe folders and to install/update the Windows C runtime and installer package file is similar.

Please try the suggestion shared in the following help articles and see if that helps and resolves the issue for you

Newer version already installed

Make sure you have all the mandatory and optional updates of Windows 7 installed, reboot the machine after updating Windows and then try installing/updating Adobe Reader.

You may try creating a test user profile with full admin rights and install Adobe Reader and check.

Hi,

 

I've got this issue for the computers with LibreOffice 6.2.8 installed. (No issue when LibreOffice isn't installed)

Adobe Reader 2018 and 2019 can't be installed or updated but Adobe Reader 2017 installation works.

 

SFC, vcredist and AcroCleaner didn't solve this issue.

I've got the same issue with a user. I tried the above as well and updated windows 1903 - 2004 still no luck. 

 

I believe the next thing I can do is a fully rebuild.
