Why do all the tabs say "August 20, 2002" instead of the file name?

No!
"*August 20, 2002*" is NOT the name of any of the documents.

Not the file-name, but the document title. Look under Properties - Description - Title and you're bound to see it there:

There is a setting in each file that tells the application whether to show the file-name or Title. It's under Properties - Initial View:

The latter is only available in Acrobat, though, not in the free Reader. You also can't change the Title in Reader.
