The credential selected for signing is invalid - Army CAC, Mac OS 10.14

Hello all.

I've recently encountered an issue where Adobe Acrobat Reader DC will not allow my military CAC credentials to digitally sign pdf forms.  I wish I could pinpoint exactly when this started happening but I don't sign documents often enough to know.  I DO know that I got an updated ID this last March, so that potentially has something to do with it.  It's an Oberthur ID One 128 v5.5a D

I can see two of the card's four certificates when I "click to sign".  I can select either, continue on, see what the signature will look like, click sign, enter the passcode, give the post-signed file a new name, but then when it actually goes to sign I get a pop-up "Error encountered while signing: The credential selected for signing is invalid".  I click "ok" and the signature field goes blank.

I have done soooo much internet searching and have been unable to find any posts with the same situation.  I've bought a new CAC reader to try and eliminate that - uninstalled and downloaded / reinstalled Adobe - restarted computer - reset my keychain login to default - cleared out my old / expired CAC certs - ensured my computer / Adobe "trusted" all of the certs always....

I just don't know what else to do.  Help me oh mighty tech world!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Georgeb,

Apologies for the delay in response, I hope you would be able to fix it by now.

If the problem still persists, as stated above, you are not able to digitally sign the document, correct?

You may try the following steps:

  • Go to Edit (Windows), Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (Mac) > Preferences > Signature > Click on More, under Identities and Trust Certificates.

  • Click on Add Digital ID as shown below.

  • Select, A Device Connected to this Computer > Next > Select the appropriate token card connected to

Hi DEEPAK38975156rtb9,

Thank you for reaching out.

As the digital ID is not detectable, please try adding it again using the steps suggested under "Register a digital ID" in the following help document: https://adobe.ly/3ysDNF4

If that does not help, try reinstalling the application and check again. Try reinstalling the application using the following steps:
-Remove the application and run the cleaner tool (https://adobe.ly/3ywjXc7).
-Reboot the machine
-Install Adobe Acrobat from the follo

To test also: Make sure you ONLY have the eID connected to your computer.
Disconnect everything else (printers, USB Hubs, ...)
It worked for me
