We assume you are referring to Acrobat Reader PDF viewer as the default app for viewing/opening PDF files on your computer. 

If yes, then its always recommended to keep the following preferences setting enabled: 

Acrobat Reader>Edit>Preferences>Documents> Automatically save document changes to Temporary file every 5 minutes.

If this setting was enabled, you could look for files in the temp folder to see if they are there.

Window key+R> type %temp%
