Why do I keep getting update failed messages when I have tried everything possible to disable automatic updates.  Where is this malware hiding that keeps invading my computer searching for files and causing this message?

Hi rickcarufel,

You might need to perform the step given in the link mention below:

Disable automatic updates in Adobe Reader DC?

Could you please let me know what options have you tried to disable automatic updates?

I shut off automatic updates in the start menu and services using the msconfig command for every Adobe product.  Unless Adobe is doing something that installs malware and violates my right to privacy that's all I should have to do.

Hi rickcarufel,

You might have changed the startup type of Adobe Reader Updater, that doesn't stop Reader from checking the updates.

Try to change preferences for Reader in registry and see if that works.

1- Close Reader.

2- Press and hold Windows key and press R on the keyboard, type regedit and hit Enter

3- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockDown

This key is for Reader DC, if you have other version of Reader, for ex- 11, the key should be Acrobat Reader\11.0

4- Right-click FeatureLockDown>select New>DWORD value

5- Type bUpdater and hit enter

6- Double click bUpdater and select 0 as a value>click OK

7- Exit registry Editor.

Why should I have to do a registry edit unless Adobe is using intrusive malware and making changes to the registry without my knowledge or permission.  How did this crap get on my computer in the first place?

Hi rickcarufel,

Adobe Updater is not trying to install any Malware on your computer, there is a possibility that some program files are missing on your computer which causing this message to appear. Below is the screenshot of the Adobe/Setup/ [AC76...... } folder on my computer.

As you mentioned, you shut off automatic updates in start menu & services using the msconfig command, that doesn't stop Adobe updater from checking the updates, it just stops the updater service to load at startup , it will still check for updates (periodically) and if the required files are missing, the error message appears.

No one said it was trying to install malware, the malware is already there and I am trying to get rid of it.

As far as its about the screenshot you posted in your question, its not a malware.

You might try uninstalling Reader using Cleaner tool from here: Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

Restart the computer, and reinstall Reader from here: Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

I don't want a pay per month acrobat I want the free reader I have and I don't want these invasive programs to constantly trying to install it.  When there is a program on my computer I never put there and don't want, but can't get rid of it, it's malware, regardless of what you choose to call it.
