why is Adobe trying to force me to buy Pro?

Community Beginner ,
Mar 28, 2023 Mar 28, 2023

I only need and have Acrobat Reader but everytime I open a PDF a pop up opens asking me if I want to:
a. start free trial and pay later or buy immediately

b. quit

I don't need or want the fancy paid package.

I just had this with one of my users. Did everything suggested but it still came up when they tested their file. Turned out they had somehow set Acrobat Reader as the default for opening DWG files and that's why the upgrade window kept popping up. Changing the default app for DWG files fixed this for us.

@Connie291966521krm - Do you have any other Adobe products installed? Can you share a screenshot of what happens when you open Adobe Acrobat Reader?

I think you downloaded the wrong one, acrobat pro, which is not free. The only free reader is thisScreenshot 2023-04-27 124545.png

https://get.adobe.com/reader/

which do not require sign in also.

when u installing it, it should appear this:

None of this is working. Adobe wants to force us into trials of Adobe Acobat Pro. If we don't accept the trial, the program closes and we cannot download a pdf file. In the process, I cannot use my paid Adobe product-export pdf. If I can't download a pdf file, then how can I convert it to a Word document!!! Please do something about this. Obviously it is coming from Adobe.

Hi, I had the same issue and solved it by following the different tips in this thread.

I did the following:

- Sign-off from the new suscription (Export pdf)

- Remove all Adobe apps from the two computers that are in the house (uninstall from Windows>Settings>Installed apps)

- Restart the computer

- Reinstall Acrobat READER (this is key) Download Adobe Acrobat Reader: Free PDF viewer

- Access your Export pdf account and services

- And now open any pdf with Adobe Reader, it should be ok.

What is confusing is that you have an app that is installed in your PC to READ and an online account where all the convertions happen. It should be one.

- You can also use edge for the time being to read pdfs until everything is sorted.

I hope it helps. It was a nightmare for me.

Is this message for me? I proposed contacting Adobe. they had to take over
my laptop. maybe this was done in my case because the inability to download
a pdf was stopping me from utilizing an Adobe product for which I pay,
namely one which converts pdf to WORD.

Also had this very annoying problem on my Samsung S24 phone.   The only way around it was to totally uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader and install a 3rd party PDF reader.  Great strategy , Adobe!

I JUST started having the same problem on April 3, 2024 on my Samsung phone. I deiinstalled and reinstalled it.  Interestingly, if you open by itself you have the ability to click "not now" but if you open it from another app like a Gmail attachment, that button isn't there. This is completely predatory.  I think we should boycott Adobe until they stop this grift. I don't want to hear that I have to go through complicated machinations to bypass the issue. This is squarely on Adobe's shoulders.

I'm having this issue as well.  I tried the pro version and canceled.  Everytime, I'm forced to pay up or it shuts down.  I'm looking for 3rd party solution.

Hi Adrian. Like you and many others here, I've had exactly the same problem. Customer care refused to speak with me because I'm not a 'paid customer', but I finally found someone on the Online Chat who advised that Adobe will occassionally upgrade Adobe Acrobat Reader to Adobe Acrobat DC without your permission - as a 'gift'. Unfortunately, the 'gift' is only the free trial, so eventually it starts asking for cash. I did a full removal of the Adobe Acrobat DC - restarted my computer - and loaded the 32-bit version Reader from this link: https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/otherversions. Apparently, that's the only version that won't auto-update and I haven't had a problem since.  Good luck!

The 32 bits Reader is distinct from Acrobat and Acrobat Pro. The 64 bits Reader should be the same binary, and the licence determines what version you have. I have no idea, why the 64 bits version behaves nasty.

Well THIS is rich. I can't uninstall it. Drag and drop to trash doesn't work. Click+command makes it wiggle but there's no "X" in the top left corner.

HELP.

Seems we're still having this same issue now into 2025. I'm now forced to transfer any pdf files to my google drive just to be able to open them. I don't want or need to upgrade to a paid version, I just want to be able to access the pdf files I have in adobe cloud and open new pdf files when I get them. Why is this issue still happening? Clicking on quit and no need to sign in at this time DOES NOT WORK! All it does is close adobe down and you can't access anything!

This is what happened to me as well. Even worse it was from the pdf in the browser that said if it doesnt render properly click here which takes you to adobes site installs the creative cloud and then FORCES you to pay for adobe. I have no replied to my customer asking for a different format, clearly adobe is on its way out of the market with these preditory business practices.
