Am I a dunce, or what?! I can't open any .pdf files with Reader 9.1. Error message: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." So I'm asking. Does anyone know what this means? Running application on a HP Pavillion Entertainment PC using Vista Home Premium. Please help.

I found a solution for my problem that was very similar to what was described here. I am running windows 7 but I was getting the same error and such when one of our employees was trying to use adobe, but not the others using the same station.
It turns out that there was something that got ported over when we migrated her profile from XP that adobe didn't like.
The fix is:
Run "regedit" from the start bar
Navigate to;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell

I just received an "update" for Adobe Reader 9. I downloaded and installed it, then tried to open a saved file from my hard drive. Same problem. Here are the "crash" details.... I have no problem "reading" .pdf files via IE. Just can't open from saved files or email attachments. I'm going out of my mind with this!!!!

Hello, Jenifer:
I understand you are unable to open local PDF files on your system but you are able via IE browser. I'd like you to try a quick modification to the preferences to see if it makes any difference?
1. Open Reader
2. Click Edit > Preferences
3. Click the Internet menu on the left
4. Toggle the "Display PDF in browser" option (if it's checked, uncheck and vise versa)
5. Uncheck the "Allow fast web preview" and "Allow speculative downloading in the background" options
6. Click OK
Also, I'd like you to clear your temp files by running the disk cleanup manager:
1. Open Computer in the Start menu
2. Right-click the C:\ drive > click Properties
3. Click "Disk Cleanup"
4. Check everything except "Compressed backup files" <- I think that's what it's called
5. Click OK
6. Reboot

I am Bonnie, not Jennifer & I have a different problem w/Adobe Reader.
Perhaps you can help. Reader crashes any time I open it or attempt to open
or save a PDF. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library terminates it. I have
updated Reader, uninstalled & reinstalled it, purchased & ran Registry
Mechanic; all to no avail. I googled the problem & didn't find any
solutions. HP says I'm on my own at this point. I can't find a way to
contact Adobe regarding this. I would certainly appreciate any
suggestions. I am painfully aware of how many times I want to open a PDF
now.

Since your issue is different, it would be best if you created a new forum thread (post). In the new thread, please include as much about your system as possible and I or someone like myself will attempt to provide you assistance as soon as we can. Please include such information as operating system, service pack info, anti-virus and/or anti-spyware info, and any error logs which may pertain to the issue at hand.
To review the event logs for errors:
1. Right-click My Computer in the Start menu
2. Click Manage
3. Expand the Event Viewer menu (+)
4. Click Application
Try the install again and once you receive the error, refresh the event log by hitting the F5 key on your keyboard. Look for events time-stamped around the time you attempted the install.

Hello, I have exactly the same problem, on Windows 2008 Terminal Server, 64bit. I updated the 9.1 to 9.2, it worked one time. Once I closed my session and return to terminal server, it doesn't work Any solution? Jennifer, does it works for you now?
P.S.: this forum doesn't work with Opera 9 (no message area...)

I solved it by using Foxit Reader instead. It works great.

get a solution from Adobe. Best to you.

Thanks for your reply, this is what I plan to test... I tried last version, but not available in French (my company is in France).
I hope all my softwares will be compatible with it... but I'm afraid one software will need Acrobat to open pdf with forms (official papers) users will have to fill and print... Impossible with Foxit Reader (maybe with payable plug-ins...)

Since downloading Foxit Reader, I've been able to resume my .pdf life again. Thank you, hardwareblues! Finally, a solution to a very frustrating problem!

I will tell you how I fixed all problems that I have read about Adobe Reader 9.1.2.
I removed Adobe Reader completely and went back and installed the original Adobe Reader 7.0.5 which came with my computer (in setup).
All problems solved. No more Run Time Errors or Memory Errors. Plus I now can open all (so far) PDF files without the files closing down.
I wrote tech support. They seemed to have no clue about any problem. Told me I shoiuld go to their forums. Seems to me they should
take their own advice.

I would NOT recommend installing an older version of Adobe Reader (or any other software for that matter - unless the system is sans Internet) since it will not be up to date on security patches. Even though Reader 7.1.3 is currently being patched, it will not be for much longer, then you are back in the same situation you find yourself now. If you are unable to resolve issues with Adobe Reader, I recommend using a different reader that has much less bloat and is updated regularily:

FoxIT is a FREE alternative to using Adobe's Reader. Support for free Adobe products is limited forums such as this. The same holds true for open source alternatives except the manufacturer usually helps support their forums while Adobe doesn't monitor this forum or any like it.
Just remember, you ALWAYS have an alternative! You just have to decide if you will choose to take the options that you are presented.

My pleasure, Bonnie. It has just come to my attention that the Foxit installer may also install the Ask Toolbar though I have not verified this. If that is the case, I'd recommend uninstalling it and/or the Ask Toolbar and downloading the .zip version from Foxit's Website since it does not require "installation thus will not sneak any spyware in there in the process.

It really seems ironic that the worry over using an older version, because
of a security issue, supercedes the update aggravation. I am to the point
that I would rather put up with the security issue. Adobe must really be a
bad product.

I have moved my business to FoxIT with great results - except for one major limitation: FoxIT does not currently support active pdf content. This makes it impossible for us to fill in certain government forms, for instance, where we are beginning to see button functions as active content.
It appears the root cause of the Reader 9.x trouble is its failure to deal with the UNC "\\" marker. This causes trouble with roaming profiles, which is what the common workaround seeks to, well, work around.
We are a Citrix shop, and roaming profiles are important to the way we are set up here. Has anyone had any success running Reader9 by specifying paths for roaming profiles using drive letters mapped via script during startup?

I found a solution/workaround for everyone:

As an admin, go to the "Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 9.x" folder.
Right click on "Acrobat.exe" (or "Acrord32.exe" if running reader only) and choose properties.
Under the "Compatibility" tab, set the program to run in compatibility mode for "XP" or "Server 2003",
depending on your options. For terminal server 2008, be sure and set the compatibility mode under
the "Show settings for all users" button.
This fixed me right up and didn't have to set any special security on the Users root.

Had the problem in Windows 7 and solved it by setting permissions on the AppData folder. (I noted that I somehow screwed up the original Windows7 permissions settings and that was the possible cause of the problems...indeed, I was willing to get access to the AppData and other unavailable/hidden folders inside my UserData space, and changed the permissions--notably removing the deny setting for everyone and replacing it by other restrictions, and this screwed up operations for several installed programs...)
Well, to solve the Adobe issue, edit permissions on the one Adobe folder that is indirectly pointed to in the Registry by
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\AppData
containing something like "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming" in my case.
precisely, it yields:C:\Users\WindowsUserId\AppData\Roaming, inside which adobe creates a folder "Adobe".
On that later "Adobe" folder, right-click properties > security > edit and add yourself (your WindowsUserId) with full control over the folder and its subfolders.
That solved the issue.
