In attempting to perform text recognition we receive Acrobat error "could not perform recognition (OCR) because page contains renderable text".

We receive a daily PDF file from our bank that is not searchable (they are not able to provide in searchable format). In attempting to perform text recognition we receive Acrobat error "could not perform recognition (OCR) because page contains renderable text".

As a workaround we copy the original file, convert the copy to TIFF, covert it back to PDF and are then able to perform successful OCR, making file searchable. This is very time consuming. We are performing this on new daily files but also have a backlog of files to address. We are seeking a better solution.

"Better solution" = Financial institution use 'proper' PDF creation software such that actual fonts are used which map to Unicode (to support search / find).

Alternative(s)  = Use of a work around such as what you are doing.

Using Acrobat Pro you may want to look at setting up an Action that "refries" the PDFs to new PDF with content being an image (at a minimum of 300ppi) then OCR those.

Be well...

Telling the bank to do something different is akin to telling the govt to stop meddling in the States affairs!!

But there seems to be an error in the first step which I'd like to resolve:  In attempting to perform text recognition we receive Acrobat error "could not perform recognition (OCR) because page contains renderable text".

I believe the Renderable text above should be unrenderable but not positive about that?

But what about this error, is that fixable? Because if so that would make the bank work around much more easily digested....

No I cannot send the file(Dr files) but it doesn't matter anyway cuz I'm able to convert with OCR on the file with my version of Acrobat X Standard.

The users with the issues all have XI or DC Standard.

So I logged onto one of their workstations and opened the document in XI Standard, Went to Tools, Recognize text, in this file, Got the prompt that Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) because page contains renderable text". Selected OK through several pages of the same prompt, and on the last page it showed almost the same message except there was No check box to ignore these messages....obviously as it was the last page.  But this is where it differs from my test, on mine it started to process the pages for OCR and hers does not.

What is the cause of this?  Otherwise this is what they have to do.  Save as Tiff's, it exports each page as a tiff 100-600 pages per document!  Then they combine these Tiff's, then they save as a PDF and Then they are able to convert to searchable text!  Holy Crap, that is ridicoulse...especially when it should work as a convert 1st step like in my test!!!

I checked the permissions of the document on their side and they have full permissions on the documents......

Server 2008 R2 for my version of X 10.1.16 Standard

Windows 7 Enterprise for the XI Standard users.

Sorry for the inconvenience. As of now, the only workaround here is to convert the PDF to image first which you are already using.

In Acrobat DC we worked to handle most of the renderable text errors. I have logged a bug for you and we are working to resolve this issue.

It would be a great help to identify and resolve this issue ASAP, If you can share a sample PDF. Your document will not be misused as no third party will have access to your document. (you can use https://cloud.acrobat.com/send and share the link of document with me or you can send it to me on mail.)

Thanks.

Hi Beth,

Sorry for the issue you are facing. We are already working on this issue to resolve it permanently to handle almost all type of documents.

Meanwhile can you please share a sample document where you are facing this issue to help us resolve the issue for the time being.

Also you can use 1 workaround as of now if that works fine for you.

1. Open File> Save As Other> Image> (any Format)

2. Create new PDF from these images.. Create > PDF from File> select all these images

3. Run OCR now. It will work and OCR it completely without giving such errors.

I hope it will resolve your problem. We will inform you once permanent solution is available in Acrobat.

Thanks.

I am having the same issue.  I captured an image of some text from my web browser (Google Chrome ver 52.0.2743.82 [64-bit]) using the snipping tool in Windows 7 Professional SP1.  I then pasted that text into a Word document (MS Word  2016) and saved that file as a PDF using Word's built-in "Save as PDF" functionality.  Then I opened the PDF in  Acrobat Pro DC version 2015.023.20053 and tried to use the "Recognize Text" functionality.  For each page, I got he error message that "Acrobat could not perform Text Recognition on this page because: The page contains Renderable Text."  Very frustrating.  Any idea when a fix will be in place?

I am happy to upload a sample document if you can tell me how to share the link with you privately.

Thanks.

Hi,

While running OCR with Searchable Image and Searchable Image Exact, you won't get the error.

But the error is still thrown when running OCR with Editable Text and Images as this operation tends to alter the document structure and hence renderable text being there,we throw the error prompt.

Please share your Acrobat build number

Firstly, please check if you are receiving this error with Searchable Image OCR setting.

Secondly, if you still want to run Editable text and Images OCR , you can export doc as image using export tool and then do as you like.

Thanks

Rishabh

Same problem using both XI and DC. Loaded 10 on another computer and didn't even get the error, it just worked. Saved hours and hours of time redacting. Will this be fixed in the later versions?

For multiple PDFs/Scenario its already resolved in Acrobat DC. We are continuously working to minimize it.

But its very difficult to identify and resolve it without the PDF. PDF is required to identify the content type casing the problem.

Thanks.
