In description of printer languages : what is the difference between "PDF 1.7 emulation" an "Direct PDF" ?

I am assuming you are referring to a print device / RIP / DFE support for printing PDF.

Unlike Adobe PostScript which is an Adobe trademarked product (although Adobe does not charge any licensing fees for third party “emulations” of Adobe's PostScript interpreters, PDF is an ISO standard. Thus, “PDF 1.7 emulation” really has no rational meaning.

On the other hand, a printer that claims support for “Direct PDF” typically implies that PDF files sent thereto are not first converted to PostScript and then the PostScript is interpreted and rendered, but rather, that the submitted PDF is directly interpreted and rendered for printing without any intermediate translations.
