Question

Do PDF Portfolios Created with Adobe Acrobat DC Require Flash Player?

Hello,

With the end of Flash Player on the horizon, I would very much like an answer to this question. I have looked through the forums, but many of the discussions related to PDF Portfolios are years old. I have read elsewhere that some changes were made to how PDF Portfolios are created in recent versions of Acrobat, so I want to make sure the old answers still apply.

We are using Adobe Acrobat DC on Windows 7 Enterprise to create PDF Portfolios. Once Flash Player is no longer supported, we intend to remove it from our machines. Therefore, we do not want to continue storing files as PDF Portfolios if they are not going to be easily accessible after Flash Player is end of life and we have removed it from our machines. Therefore, I want to know: Do PDF Portfolios created with Adobe Acrobat DC require Flash Player to be opened normally? These PDF Portfolios would not contain any video files and most would be made up entirely of PDF files. Some may also contain a few Excel, Word, and Outlook files as well as PDFs.

I have read elsewhere there are ways to convert files stored as PDF Portfolios into other formats, so that the contained information is not lost. However, we do not want to store files as PDF Portfolios now, if we will just need to convert them later. Therefore, if the end of Flash Player will mean PDF Portfolios (regardless of the Acrobat version they were created on) cannot be opened normally, we want to stop using that format. We can of course combine multiple files into one PDF document or attach the other files to a single PDF document to get around using PDF Portfolios. However, neither of those methods seem as clean and easy as using PDF Portfolios, so we would prefer to keep using them if possible.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

If you create the portfolio in Acrobat DC then Flash is not used in it.

Thank you for your quick response! That is very helpful!

A few clarifications:

1. So Flash Player doesn't need to be installed to create or view a PDF Portfolio in Acrobat DC. Is that correct?

2. Was Acrobat DC the first Acrobat version to not use Flash Player in PDF Portfolios? For example, did Adobe Acrobat XI still use Flash Player for PDF Portfolios? I am wondering how far back we should look for saved PDF Portfolios that still rely on Flash Player. If we know which Acrobat versions relied on Flash Player, we can just look at all PDF Portfolios created while we used those Acrobat versions.

3. Can Acrobat DC PDF Portfolios be viewed in older Adobe Reader/Acrobat versions without Flash Player installed?

4. Are Acrobat DC created PDF Portfolios compatible with third-party PDF viewers (for example: Apple macOS Preview app) or will users encounter issues?

Thank you very much for your help!

1. Correct.

2. I believe so, yes.

3. Yes.

4. Can't answer that. There are probably dozens, if not hundreds, of PDF viewers out there, each one with its own set of capabilities.

If the viewer is compliant with the PDF ISO Standard then yes, but most of them are not.
