How do I show today's date on form?

I've created a text field called today. I've created a JavaScript with the code for the current date to populate the field automatically when the file opens. There seems to be another step after this, because nothing is happening. I don't know if I need to set something to calculate, import data, or something else. Help!

Thank you. I found the answer among the other questions and answers. I had no idea the field name was case sensitive. Worked right away after I fixed that.
