If anybody out there knows the answer to my question, could s/he please be kind enough to explain it to me.
I use a PC,Windows10 which insists on Acrobat Reader DC which I cannot stand.I am used to the Acrobat 5.0 but no matter how many times I click on "Always use this app.." next time it reverts back to the Reader.
Thank you for your help.

Hi mrsl81326743,
Please refer the steps provided in this help article: Associate PDF files to always open in Acrobat or Reader on Windows 10
Check if it helps.
Would like to inform you that Adobe Acrobat 5 is not compatible with Windows 10.
It may or may not work properly with this OS version.
It is also an old and unsupported version.
Regards,
Meenakshi

Actually, there are many features of Acrobat 5 that we know won't either install or work under Windows 10.

Dear Dov Isaacs,
as long as the enforced Reader cannot do things which the Acrobat 5 did with ease,I have every reason to feel hard done by MS. Generally speaking MS has become unbearably dictatorial and while I realise that Apple and Google too prefer and push their own products, they do it in a less Big Brother-ly manner.W10 is unpleasant to use and if W11 does not improve the experience I shall not be the only one to Change to Google.

My experience is that tablets have less powerful readers and you cannot change the default. But perhaps Chrome Books are different.
What is it that Reader 5 does for you that Reader DC does not. I can't think of anything. Or is it actually Acrobat 5 - in which case it's Acrobst Pro DC to compare with.

Dear MVP,
thank you for your reply. The incident when I hit the roof was that I needed to print out a page in colour;it was a document but some lines in it were in red and it was important to keep this.
I set the printing to colour and to Preview. The preview was perfect, showed red and black lines exactly as they should be but when it came to printing it printed it in plain black;no matter how many times I tried.
Opened the same .pdf in Acrobat 5, and hey presto it printed exactly as it should.
I have used the Acrobat 5 for some years and I found its editing facilities useful.I have no intention of buying any software as I am not at all sure that I stay with MS as I have tried to explain I find W10 too dictatorial to my taste.
Have checked Chromebooks, there is a choice of pdf readers/editors,Hurray!

Make sure you update your version of Reader to the latest one available. This issue was resolved recently.

Dear Meenakshi,
thank you for taking trouble to explain how to make the hated Acrobat Reader a default.
I wonder if changing to Chromebook would help me to choose what and when I want to use.
