Large PDF prints from Adobe Pro but not Adobe Reader

I have a PDF which is 12mb on disk and 60mb when spooled to the print server. It's A0 size and a very high quality image. We have thousands of these large PDFs.

If I try and print it from Adobe Reader (latest version of DC, downloaded today) it shows the progress bar and then doesn't print. If I try to print it from Adobe Acrobat Pro it prints fine. I have 'print as image' set on both. I made no other changes to the products. This is having both bits of software installed on the same PC. I have tried doing the same test on 5 PCs and always get the same results, pro works, reader doesn't.

Does anyone know why this might be?

I have found the issue! I turned off 'protected mode'

Protected View feature for PDFs (Windows), Adobe Reader

Now off to find what that does

Sure, it's a HP Designjet T790ps Plotter. It's using the latest HP Designjet T790ps 44in HPGL2 driver which is PostScript.

The pdf is A0 in size. I have found that smaller documents print ok, it's just large PDFs that cause this issue.

Some printer drivers may intercept the Adobe created Postscript code and change instructions there-in to produce "printer optimized" results, but that should be the same for one or the other. I also would expect Adobe Acrobat Reader to use the same (or basically the same) printer engine than Adobe Acrobat.

It was an old version of Adobe Acrobat (2015) which didn't have the protected mode which was why it worked. The issue is that it wouldn't print with protected mode enabled. Turning it off fixed the issue.

How do I raise this as an official bug?

Thanks, that's a pity in a way because there were some known print problems but they are supposed to be all fixed now. One thing you can try, to investigate this, is to Print to File from both of the apps. Do they both finish, and write a large file? (This is a test, not a solution).

The version of Adobe Acrobat Pro I am using doesn't have a "protected mode at startup" option which I expect is why it works.

Good thinking, I did that as a test and got these results:

Adobe Reader 130kb .prn file

Adobe Acrobat Pro 60,2091kb .prn file

Do you think this is a bug?

Do you still have your "print as image" on?

What specific version of Reader do you have today (like 2016.123.43434)?

It's 2018.011.20038

Why do you have "print as image" set? This is a desperate last resort when nothing else works, so what's the original ;problem?

Sorry I should have said; I tried without print as image and got the same results. Print as image was for troubleshooting.

I have done another test on a smaller 2mb file (on disk) which is 12mb when spooled and that has worked. So it's as if there is a size limit capping what will print?
