On conversion of a document from PDF to Word, I find that typographical errors depend on font size:
12 point--errors are infrequent and tolerable
11.5 point--errors are frequent and require extensive editing in Word
10 point or less--it's easier to retype
Note that these errors are not in the PDF as the rendering is correct. Rather, the fidelity of conversion does not match the fidelity of the PDF.
Note only are letters, spacing, etc., incorrect but advanced font styles appear in an attempt to match the PDF rendering. Try it and you won't like it when the point size is 11.5 or less.

Hi walterw,
Do you know how the original PDFs were created? If there is an issue with the fidelity of the conversion, the problem typically lies with the source PDF. PDFs created by third-party (non-Adobe apps), may not be written to spec, and that can affect the quality of the conversion. It could also be that the fonts used in the PDF aren't embedded, or aren't available to the ExportPDF online service.
To determine how a PDF was created, choose File > Properties, and look for the PDF Creator on the Description tab.
Best,
Sara
