Pantone Color Matching Not Working

New Here ,
Mar 11, 2020 Mar 11, 2020

Hello,

I am trying to use the "Pantone Match" form  https://color.adobe.com/mythemes.  The last successful time I used it was Jan 23, 2020.

(Read about it here: https://theblog.adobe.com/adobe-color-cc-pantone-themes-palettes/)

When I select Pantone Matches, I see this error. "Unable to connect to server, please try again in a while." If I close and reopen it, I see the Pantone 'chips' but cannot select a 'Pantone Book'.  The drop-down does nothing and there are no Pantone Numbers.  Like this:

See this screen capture:

Thank you.

It would be very helpful if Adobe would put that information on the site and/or remove the functionality and all references to it in the support documentation, instead of users getting frustrated with server errors.

Is it just the Pantone matching that's no longer supported, or is Adobe no longer supporting the Color website?

Hi, I am having this very same issue.  Has the problem not been resoved yet? Or is it an issue with my computer?

I see that there is a note stating that from March 2022 the pantone function will be removed from future updates in Adobe Colour but it is only January last time I looked..

It looks like this feature has not been supported since March 2020, and Adobe seems to be planning to finally remove the non-functional feature from the user interface, two years later.

Thanks for your message.  I used this tool only one month ago and it worked perfectly and I have just been on chat with Adobe Tech Support and they didn't mention that the function had been removed..

Also I haven't seen any warning messages until today about the removal of this function.

It is a mystery, perhaps someone from Adobe Support would like to explain what is going on.

I just read the notice you posted more carefully, and saw that this actually applies to the swatch libraries that ship with Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

I can only assume that Adobe failed to negotiate a new license with Pantone, and built-in Pantone colour library support is going away. I'm not happy about this.

Thank you for the heads-up that this was about to happen. I really appreciate the advance notice. Where did you see the notification?

I've just made backup copies of all of the swatch library files from Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

No problem, I have been doing the same.  The link is here:

it says from updates so I think as long as you don't update you can have an extra month or so using it..

I have been chatting with Adobe Technical Support and it won't be disabled until March..  so apparently the issue is my computer.

The problem with the Adobe Color website is definitely nothing to do with your computer. It's a disconnect between Adobe and Pantone.

Hi @D^rren , I think this thread contains two different issues—@hambay’s original post was asking about the PANTONE MATCHES feature in the Adobe Color web theme creator, which indeed no longer works.

Screen Shot 19.png

It seemed like a questionable feature to start with—the chances of getting accurate PANTONE Solid ink matches to any given theme without adversely affecting the color harmony seems remote. And then when you get the Pantone "matches", are the theme colors really going to be printed with solid ink spot colors on an offset press, or are they going to be printed as CMYK process colors, or displayed as RGB?  If the theme output is to process CMYK or an sRGB display, what’s the point of using the less accurate Pantone swatches at all? The theme could be saved out as Lab colors and then the color conversions could be managed in the CC apps.

On the removal of the Pantone libraries from the CC applications—the Pantone libraries are .acb files, which get installed as presets—so unless future CC apps are no longer going to support .acb swatch presets, you should be able to manually save and install the existing .acb libraries. The current .acb files haven’t been upgraded since CS6

There is also the option to use Pantone’s Color Manager software to generate complete .acb libraries, which you can get here. I used the trial awhile back to export up-to-date .acb libaries:

https://www.pantone.com/customer-service/software-download?gclid=Cj0KCQiAw9qOBhC-ARIsAG-rdn50v8OHl17...

And there is also the new Pantone Connect extension, which lets you search the most recent Pantone libraries and add color to the Swatches panel. Currently Pantone states that the search and add features will be free, but the full sharing and exporting features will be by subscription.

Hi,

Sorry to jump in here but thank you, this is the information I was looking for and super helpful.  I wish I had received an answer like this when I contacted Adobe Support about the issue.. instead they told me it was my computer that was the problem.

I actually found Adobe Colour & matching pantones to themes super useful as an initial tool for creating palettes.  (I am an accessories designer and need to match to existing leather shades anyway, I don't often use the pantones to labdip or match to CMYK/RGB).

Anyway I now have Pantone connect (another subscription to pay for) though it is a wee bit clunky to use.

And found this article which is an interesting take on the whole thing:

https://creativepro.com/pantone-color-libraries-are-leaving-the-adobe-apps/

Adobe I must say have been awful at communicating this change.

But thanks for your tips ☺️

An alternate for getting the closest Pantone would be to set the Color Mode for your theme to Lab (Pantone Solid Inks are defined as Lab), save the theme and it will sync to your Photoshop Libraries panel, and from there you can get the closest Pantone book value from the Color Picker by clicking Color Libraries and choosing a book:

I don’t think there is any reason why you won’t be able to continue using the existing .acb files. In the past Pantone has explicitly allowed swatch sharing, and supposedly the color picking version of Pantone Connect will free.

Here is an archived page from their site on swatch sharing:

Anyway I now have Pantone connect (another subscription to pay for)

There is a FAQ if you click your avatar in the opper right corner of the panel

I subscribed to get the 30 day trial and then cancelled the subscription. According to the FAQ I should be able to continue picking colors after the trial.

Wow thanks so much for these tips, that is a great method and I will try that for now.

I have also subscribed to the 3 month free trial of Pantone Connect.  I wasn't able to use the colours in the Adobe softwear at all without signing up but lets see if that changes.  I guess it is still early days.

Thanks so much again for your super helpful tips.

LATEST

Right clicking a swatch and choosing ADD TO SWATCH should add the swatch to the app’s Swatches panel, although for some reason it stopped working in InDesign after my last login. It is working as expected in Illustrator and Photoshop.
