How do you set the grid dimensions in a collage

Every month I made a collage out of two square pictures that I want to put into a 2:1 aspect rectangle. Seems simple enough. When I place my photos on the page and click on create college instead of getting two square pictures side by side it divides the rectangle  horizontally and gives me slices of the two square pictures. This is insane. How do I make the division horizontal?
