Adobe media encoder has encountered an unexpected error and cannot continue

This error has inexplicably started popping up whenever I try to render from After Effects or simply open the software on it's own.

I've emptied the cache and restarted the MAC but it simply will not open.

i had this too - when i wanted to make proxies from premier pro - i accidentally chose to make media encoder not connect to my documents, not sure if that's related, but I get a notification that stops it from opening media encoder
