A few nights ago I started having issues with my external harddrive I use to edit off of. It started simple as just getting more slow than usual, and I noticed that the disk usage would be pinned to 100 in task manager and the project file I was working in crashed. I went to bed figuring I would deal with it tomorrow, and the next day suddenly one of the bigger folders on there, my stock footage folder, was corrupt and unreadable. After trying to deal with that for an hour or so suddenly I started having issues with the other folders as well where it was telling me there was an I/O error in reading any of the folders on the drive. When I plugged the drive into my laptop everything was accesible, so it seems like it is an issue with my PC specifically. Windows prompted me to repair the drive when I plugged it back in and that seemed to fix most of my problems. (I also somewhere along the way switched the hard drive's cord with another one I had lying around). My stock footage folder was no longer corrupt but it was now completely empty, the rest of my folders were able to be accessed again. I figured whatever at least the problem seems to be fixed guess I'll take the L and redownload some of the stock I needed for the videos I was currently working on and move on. I noticed some of the images I was using in the video were suddenly appearing black in the timeline and bins, so I redownloaded those and converted them and then finally moved on to exporting.
Here's where it got a lot worse. I can't seem to export any of the 3 videos I need to. At first I had the more pressing video at the top of the queue but that would get about 4 seconds into the export before failing, and then the next two would suddenly fail immediately after. The error for the first would say something about frame recursion attempt aborting, and the other two would say that the destination (external hard drive) could not be found. I swapped the order of the videos so the first one was at the bottom, and then they started to get exported as normal, until right at the end with probably a minute left when suddenly they would fail, again saying the destination couldn't be found. Sometimes it would just give me a generic "error completing render" with nothing more. At one point when I reset the videos the third video suddenly said it had offline media, so I pulled up the project file and there was no offline media in the sequence at all. However some of the images, different ones this time, were showing up black or not loading in the source/program window. If I doubled clicked on it in the bin or put my playhead on it in the sequence it would just keep whatever was last in the source/program without updating. I tried re-exporting the other videos but this time it was failing due to frame recursion errors and such.
As an experiment I tried exporting to my local disk, and one of the videos actually completed exporting but with an error about not being able to write the XML file.
I just tried exporting one of them out of premiere instead of ME and it fully exported...but with about 15 errors "retrieving frame" so the end result looked kind of choppy, and for whatever reason the export took about twice as long as it usually does as well.
I'm really at my wit's end here. I have no idea what to even troubleshoot anymore or what the problem is. It seems to be with this external hard drive but I just don't understand why it just randomly started doing this overnight. I didn't download any files to it or anything like that before this started happening. It was working perfectly fine just a few days ago. If anyone has any insight at all as to what's happening here it would be greatly appreciated I could really use the help.
I've already tried quite a few of the usual things, trying other usb ports, restarting, Adobe CC Cleaner tool, reinstalling premiere, cleaning the media cache, copying the sequence into a new project file, looked to see if the drivers for the hard drive could be updated, it doesn't let me, troubleshooting came back with no issues as well. Another detail I should mention is I have been getting a lot of "adobe creative cloud needs to be repaired" diaglogue boxes the past few weeks. I'll hit repair, and then sometimes in a matter of hours I will get another one. Not sure if that's related to all this.
