Missing text bug in AME export, direct export from Premiere 2018 works

I have a ten minute sequence that I tried to export from PP2018 via AME. I got a font missing errror message, and the sequence renders with the second line of all of my two-line lower thirds missing.

However,

the font AME reports missing is not the font that is in the lower thirds, and

The lower third font is present on my system, previews on my timeline, and

The sequence exports correctly when using the "Export" button rather that using "Queue" to start AME

And,

The font that is reported missing is a corrupted text string that is a garbled name of a font that is used in other titles in the sequence

The corrupted string is "Aloveofthunderder". The correct font is "A Love of Thunder" (or "Aloveofthunder")

When opening the project, "Aloveofthunderder" is also listed as a missing font, but since it is a corrupted name and not a real missing font, there is no way to correct the error message. This behavior has not changed between PP2017 and PP2018.

This project file is fairly complex, with thousands of assets in its bins, though only a few sequences at this point. It was oreiginally created by importing an XML file that was generated by FCP7, of a long form documentary work-in-progress. This was imported recently into PP2017 and then updated to PP2018.

This particular lower third may have been made by modifying a text layer that was imported from FCP7, but I am not sure. I have manually changed the fonts.

So, how do I fix this and how do I clean up the mess?

Hi Mark, sorry you're having this problem.

Were all your lower third titles part of an XML import from FCP7 or just some of them?  My hunch is that something got corrupted in one or more of those titles that were converted from XML.  You can try narrowing down the problem by saving a copy of your project and deleting a few titles from the copied project, then sending the edited sequence to AME again and see if you still get the missing font notification.  If not, you know the problem lies in the titles you deleted.

Also, if you switch to the "Graphics" workspace and select a title in your sequence, what appears in the Essential Graphics panel when you switch to the Edit tab?  If it's a legacy title you won't see a text layer; it will be blank instead.

If it is a legacy title that's causing the missing font error you may need to recreate the title from scratch.  If it's a newer title you could try selecting the text layer and choosing the same font again, which may resolve the issue.

I believe that most, if not all, of the titles were a result of the XML import from FCP7. I wasn't paying close attention, as I didn't have any inkling there would be a project, until it came time to export.

The titles were imporated as new text, and were subsequently edited in PP force the font to be refreshed.

Obviously there is a bug in PP and/or AME. The XML is imported with some kind of subtle corruption, which only shows up when exporting via AME (vs. native export).  In my opinion, PP should better validate XML import to trap this corruption, and/or fix AME so that it acts consistently when processing via the built-in render engine.
