Is it possible to create a drop shadow layer without fill? I just want to have the shadow effect but not the fill and once I turn off the fill the shadow goes away with it.
Is there a workaround for this?
Some tricks.
1. make fill the same color as a background
2. Mask only shadow.

Nope. As they say in English: you can't have your cake and eat it. Maybe some nifty trick in Photoshop or After Effects might be able to do so, but not this XD puppy, I'm afraid.
But you can try mimicking the vague impression of a shadow, by using the Object Blur setting like this:

Ooh, good tricks !!
BTW: are you trying to achieve a Neumorphism design ?

Make an object with a shadow and a white fill (very important). Then apply a blend mode of Multiply (chose that from the "Normal" menu below Opacity).
