How to mask with shape in XD?

Hi, as I see it, you're masking the elements with the shape, and as you might know, when you select "mask with shape" option, XD masks the elements below with the shape on top, and as I see it works in examples that has the top shape as vector. The examples you show as "fail" are the ones that has the text on top, if you want to mask layers with text, you need to first convert them to shape/path/outline them (select text and press cmd-8 (or ctrl-8)).
