How to Optimize Performance in Adobe XD for Large Projects

New Here ,

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a design project in Adobe XD that involves a significant number of artboards and complex interactions. As the project grows, I’m noticing a noticeable lag in performance, especially when switching between prototype and design modes or making adjustments to components.

I’ve already tried reducing the number of open files and restarting my system, but the issue persists. I’m wondering if there are best practices or tips to optimize performance for larger projects in XD.

Specifically, I’d like to know:

  • Are there settings in XD that can help reduce lag?
  • Would splitting the project into smaller files improve performance, or does this cause other issues?
  • Are there any system requirements I should check to ensure my machine is running optimally for XD?

I’m also curious if anyone has experience exporting such large projects into other tools or platforms to streamline workflows. For instance, integrating certain assets with external apps like audio tools or third-party resources (e.g., music site) to enhance user interaction during prototyping.

Looking forward to hearing your insights!

Thanks in advance. 😊

Hey there! You can split your project into multiple files, in whatever way makes sense for you (for example, if it's a website - one file for the mobile version and another for desktop).

You can have your design system & components in one file and publish it as a library to use as linked components in your other files.

The main limitation would be that you can't have pages from different files linking to each other in a prototype, and you will have to click and update your library and assets in both files after making changes.
