When i Import a 3d model into AE Beta it doesn't show up. The controls to move it around do, it's like it's invisible. Does anyone know a fix?

Hi @CharlieP3 ,

Thank you for filing this bug. What build of After Effects Beta are you currently using? We had an issue with a problem very similar to this last week, which was fixed in build x18.

If you are using the current builds (x23 or x24), could you please DM me the model, or a link to it? There is a bug where certain Adobe Stock models do not render, or only partially render.

I have the same problem. I'm using AE beta x24.

After I import .obj file, I can see the controls to move or scale but it doesn't show up the object.

I am having the same issue. My version updated overnight and today, I can only see the bounding box and controls. Worked great yesterday.

Btw, mine is not a stock model, but a GLB exported from Dimension.

@Chanveasna and @bradenblake , could you please DM me a link to the files that are not working? Braden, could you also send me the .DN project file so I could try to recreate it myself?

CharlieP3 sent me a link to a file, but I'm not able to reproduce the failure.

Also, @bradenblake , what happens when you try to open the project in a previous version? Which previous version are you using? A reminder that features in After Effects Beta, like 3D model import, are not expected to work in the public release builds, like After Effects (non-Beta) 23.6, which was released last week.

One thing that I've forgotten to recommend as a troubleshooting step. This is for anyone in this thread who is having a problem importing 3D models:

  1. Restart After Effects Beta. When you restart, leave AE open on a fresh, empty project.
  2. Choose Edit > Purge > All 3D Cache (or All Cache).

This will clear the 3D cache, which contains files related to rendering OBJ files and model textures. I don't necessarily expect this help for most cases, but it is definitely something you should try.

Yeah I was using 24.1 today and I'm having similar issues. I'm also not using a stock obj but one I made from Illustrator.

Was there ever a resolution to this issue? I can see bounding boxes but not the objects. I have tried several different file types to no avail. 3D models simply will not show up for me.

1. Are you using the "Advanced 3D" renderer? Classic does not support 3D models and will simply show bounding boxes.

2. It's possible that the camera isn't looking at your model, or the camera is inside the model. Can you try Select Model Layer | Layer | Model Settings | Basic | Make Comp Size | OK

Unfortunately, there's a small percentage of GPUs that simply don't have enough VRAM (4GB) to run "Advanced 3D." Most of these machines are 6+ years old. If you private message me the following details, I will take a look (please don't attach them here).

On Windows:
1. Start | "dxdiag" (this will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool).
2. In the tool, choose "Save All Information..." to a file.
3. Attach the file in a private message.

I had the same issue. Until I realize that the 3D model was below the video footage in the timeline panel. I could see the 3D controls and bounding box, but I could not see the 3D Model. Once I put the 3D model above the video clip in the timeline panel, then I was able to see the 3D model.
