Have a monospaced font option

I'm sure I'm not alone in lamenting the lack of a monospaced option to force any font to ignore all kerning when making an animated counter in After Effects. To clairfy: If I have a counter starting at 0, counting up to 1000, when it gets to numbers like 111, the character spacing is very different from, say 888, and the characters jiggle around regardless of justification. I know there are a handful of monospaced fonts I could use, but most of them are ugly. From a non-coder's perspective, I wouldn't have though it would be too difficult to code; just set an arbitrary character space for all characters (ignoring the built-in font's settings), and allow the user to tweak it with the tracking/kerning tools.

There's even sufficient space to the left/right of the existing all caps/faux bold etc. icons in the Character Palette to have a Monospace option:

I agree, having this native in AE would be great. But in the meantime, have you tried Monospacer or the fully fledged Digit Fiddler plugins on AE Scripts? They are very very good and produce great results, sometimes requiring a little tweaking. Plus their support is super responsive if you run into any issues. This one saved me a few times recently. So good!
