Adobe crash leads to ruined save files

I'm making characters with the various graphics on layers and parented to each other.  (The thigh is connected to the body, for example.)  TWICE Animate has crashed, and when I've reloaded, every graphic is strangely positioned and rotated throughout the scene, every keyframe!  This is true for the recovery file AND my save file.  What is going on?!  The first time I scrapped the project and started over, but I'm desperately hoping there's an easy fix for this even though I'm pretty sure that the short answer is to just not support Animate and get some other software.

save frequently with increasing version number appended to your file name.  periodically close and reopen the most recent version to confirm it's not corrupted.

How can this be the correct answer?  I mean, thank you, but... good grief.  The save files work fine when closing and reopening until these crashes.  Why does it screw up the save file?  (I'm sure you don't know.  I'm kinda just screaming into the wind, and if I have to start over, I'm gonna explore NOT-Adobe options.)
