Creating a mask layer in Animate not seeming to work

New Here ,
Apr 19, 2022 Apr 19, 2022

Hi, I'm essentially a novice in using Animate, but I took a course on using it (with Windows). I'm now on Mac and trying to create a mask layer but it isn't working (the mask layer shows the little mask layer icon but doesn't mask the layer below it), and I assume my problem is how I attempted to create the mask layer.

Here's what I tried:

  • double click on the layer name
  • I get a window titled 'Layer Properties'
  • Under type, I select 'Mask'.

This does nothing. I'm stuck, please help.

Make sure that the layer that you want to mask is both below the mask layer and is indented below the mask layer.

The icons may not show that indentation that well as the icon for an unindented layer is narrower than the mask icon on the mask layer.

You can look at the names of the layers to see if they are in the same position or drag the layer below to see where the line with a little circle appears between the layers. If the little circle on the left end of that line is to the left of the layer icons, then the layer you want to mask is not indented. If it is to the right of the icons then it is indented. If the layer that you want to mask is not indented, drag the layer so that the line between the layers shows the circle to the right of the mask layer icon, and then your content should be masked.
