I'm tech director on a pilot for a live kids show, where the backgrounds are all reworked FLA files from a previous animated series of the same. I need to 'pan' the Animate 'stage' on a huge projected screen (about 32:9 ratio) live, and it seems to me doing it in Animate via an external midi controller would be the go, so we can keep the backgrounds in sync with live on-stage actors, while keeping the images resolution-independant (unlike if I were to render out a video file).

- who's done anything like this before?

- who can advise on most reliable method?

I can't be the first person to need to do this!!

I think you'd be able to do this via AIR. Here is a quick google search that may help: https://www.google.com/search?q=adobe+air+midi+control&oq=adobe+air+midi+control&aqs=chrome..69i57j3...
