Whenever I duplicate a library symbol, flash CS5.5 crashes and needs to be restarted.

Any clue?

Hi All,

In case you still face any freezing issue/crashes along the steps mentioned in this forum, please make sure to keep all your Font items in the Library Root itself instead of placing them within folders - as a workaround.

These crashes along with redundant duplication of Font items in library have been fixed in Flash CC.

Thanks,

Nipun

I will be working in Corona / other SDK's until Adobe gets it act together, can't afford spending loads of money yearly on software that crashes with worsening quality control. "Auto-save" feature was the final nail in the coffin for me - basically Adobe admitting that they can't code stable software anymore. At least Photoshop still works OK.

@Dave - just love it when deleting that font sets all your library items back to _sans, so in my case, I had to go through over a 100 items and manually set the text back again. This was after months of convincing our designers to use fonts linked in the library because it would "save us time in the future" - more like "be a huge pain in the future".

Yes, I ran into that too and its a pain to go and change all the text.  I did find thought that you can select all of the text on a screen and change all of it to the font you want by just going up to text-font-Arial-Regular(e.g.) and it will change all of it to that font rather than having to click on each and every piece of text and reset it.  A little bit of a time saver anyway....I'm not sure if there is a way to reset all of the text throughout the .fla, seems logical, but I haven't found it yet.

Well getting it now with instances of using standard fonts (Impact) too when duplicating library items.... another 2 hours of work lost... by this time CS5.5 has already cost me more money in lost productivity than I paid for it.... just great.

Whoops my mistake, was still dynamically linked, guess I forgot to check every single instance of text being used with Movie Explorer... since deeply nested fields don't always show up, you still have to go manually every now and then.

Here's another curious thing.  I'm running cs5.5 on my laptop today and duplicated a symbol in the library, it worked perfectly, WITH embedded fonts in the library!  hmmm....makes me think there is one of these things happening:

1. hardware conflict with my desktop pc causing it to crash when there are embedded fonts in the library???

2. driver conflict with my desktop pc causing it to crash when there are embedded fonts in the library???

3. font problem with my desktop pc causing it to crash when there are embedded fonts in the library???

ideas?

dave

I upgraded to CS6 specifically in the hopes they'd fixed this bug. Nope, it's still there. We've been seeing this since at least CS5.0 and I've personally reported it as a bug with every version. It seems to crop up any time you have complicated nested movie clips with custom linked fonts. Although you may be able to avoid it by switching everything to TLF text (thanks snigglewidgets), that isn't possible with my project as it bumped my filesize, publish and compile times through the roof. There are at least five other font-related bugs in the latest versions of Flash and AS3. Maybe it's time they threw it all out and started over.

WORKAROUND: Switching all my text to point directly at the font instead of the embedded font name fixed it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I work on very large projects which do require centralized font management, and TLF is far too intensive.

By now I just create a new symbol and copy/paste layers. Not a big deal.

Still this was fixed in version 5.5.1, and somehow came back in version 6...

Somebody at Adobe will know what went wrong and can fix it in next update.

In CS6, I created a new library folder called "fonts" where I keep all the fonts in my library, just to separate it from my movieclip. I tried duplicating the movieclip and it worked!

Regarding the fix supplied by MasterBladeUp, I think this does solve the problem. By default, I kept my embedded font symbols in a Fonts folder:

Fonts

> MyFont1

> MyFont2

However, I just recently started getting this hanging issue, and upon reading this thread, I noticed that there was a stray duplicate MyFont1 sitting in the root of my Library. I'm assuming that this symbol was generated the last time I duplicated a MovieClip. Now that I was trying to duplicate another MovieClip, I believe Flash was trying to overwrite this stray font symbol, and this was causing the hang. I deleted this duplicate font symbol, tried again to duplicate my MovieClip, and it worked just fine. It did however re-create that stray duplicate font symbol in the root of my Library, so I just had to make sure to delete it again.

Edit: I am using Flash CS 5.5 on Windows 7.
