Help with selecting a line segment

Hi, how do I select a segment of path from an imported .ai file from Illustrator in Animate? The ai image is in the Library and I can put it on the stage - move it, rotate it, etc. What I want to do is also select just a segment of the image (part of the line) and animate it seperately but I can't figure out how to select the segment. The whole image stays intact. Thanks!

select the symbol and click modify>break apart.

this can be done repeatedly (and undone) until you what you want.
