How do I synchronize an embedded graphic symbol with the main timeline?

I'm using Animate CC. I have animated a character which is in a graphic symbol. In the main timeline, the animation plays fine. When I go to a key at frame 640 and double click the symbol on the stage, it opens the embedded symbol but on an arbitrary frame. Isn't there a way to sync the symbol with the main timeline, so that when I click fr. 640 in the main timeline, it goes to fr. 640 in the embedded symbol?

It seems like this was something you could set in Preferences in old versions of Flash.

Hmm... it should be opening the symbol at that frame. What happens if you have the instance selected at the frame and instead of double clicking, go to Edit > Edit in Place?

Good idea, Myra. I tried that but it didn't work either. I was on fr. 640 in the main timeline, right-clicked Edit in Place, and it opened the symbol on fr. 490.

If I go into the symbol timeline and move to fr. 500, then go back to the main timeline, no matter what frame I'm on, when I click Edit in Place, it opens the symbol at fr. 500.

What you're requesting is exactly what Animate already does. I just tested it.

Sounds to me like your character symbol doesn't have as many frames as the main timeline.

Here's another thought: add a classic tween to your character symbol layer Ann's in the first keyframer of the tween, select the key frame and in properties panel check the Sync option. This may not be what you want because it will lock the nested frames to the main timeline.

Your issue could be that this Sync iron is already checked?
