Is there a way to change the opacity of the onion skinning?

It's way too light for me. I've tried changing the color of the onion skins to a darker shade but it doesn't help much. I use the pencil tool to sketch and lineart.

Changing the color of the Onionskin in Preferences is good but if that isn't good enough for you, try changing the background color of your document. Otherwise, you can't actually adjust the opacity of onionskin directly because it's different for all frames depending on how many you have selected to be shown.

If it's helpful, you can adjust the opacity on a layer level. Right click just to the right of a layer name and select Layer Properties. In the context menu panel that pops up you will see there's a transparency option. When selected it provides you the option to set the transparency for an entire layer between 0 and 100%. This may not help at all but sometimes I use it like an onionskin or lightbox tool.
