Since your question is about Adobe Animate, I have moved it from the Acrobat Reader forum where you posted.

When Animate is closed, go to:

Win: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Animate\YourVersion\
Mac: HD\Users\YourUserName\Library\Preferences\Adobe\Animate\YourVersion\

There find a file, called AppPrefs.xml

Open it in a plain text editor and you will see a list of the recent files in <ustring> tags

Like this: <ustring>your file.fla</ustring>

Delete them all and save the file.

Open Animate. The recent files list will be empty.

No.

But if you make the file (AppPrefs.xml) Read-only it is likely that it won't be able to keep adding new files.

Haven't tested extensively, but it seems that way...

This may have other implications, so keep in mind, if you try to change a setting and it doesn't stick.
