also getting (or rather, receiving) data from a database. but for
now, buttons and the like. basics.

There's a big difference between buttons & basics and database
communication, so basics is a good start. 🙂 Have you searched for
anything online yet? Google is showing a ton of links for the phrase "AS3
tutorials". Just curious where you've looked so far (and if you have, what
hasn't struck your fancy yet).

Over at
http://lynda.com/ (
http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modListing.asp?sid=81)
you can find all sorts of tutorials, though you'll have to pay for
a subscription. You can also check out
http://www.tutorialized.com/
for some free tutorials on all kinds of stuff. The best thing to do
it just Google it and you'll probably get lots of good search
results.

I checked lynda, and I didn't see anything past flash 8
(perhaps I'm visually challenged?) and on google I've found lots,
but it's a matter of wading through what's good and what's not. I
was wondering if there were links on this site to good tutorial
sites or if anyone knew of something good.
@-Twinbird24
thank you for the links, I'll check that lynda one specifically, I like the way that site lays out the tutorials.
Thank you both very much.

Lynda.com has Flash CS3 stuff You can sorty by Product on their home
page (look for the Product drop down).

Value judgements are always subjective, of course. Lee Brimelow has a
series of well respected video tutorials at http://www.gotoAndLearn.com/. I
write tutorials for CommunityMX.com (it's a subscription site, but many
articles are free, and you can sign up for a trial subscription with no
obligations).
If you're into books, you can usually do pretty well by looking over
user reviews on Amazon. I co-wrote Foundation Flash CS3 for Designers
(friends of ED) with my buddy Tom Green last year, and reviews are good.
Our book doesn't go into database interaction, but it's a 600 page reference
that goes into the basics of just about everything, and it sells on Amazon
for $26.39, which gets you free shipping in the US.

I found some good website you can check out:
The following are online resources for Flash information:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/
This is a great resource for learning ActionScript 3.0 and just about anything imaginable related to Flash.
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/2/langref/migration.html
This site is a must if you are migrating from ActionScript 2.0 to ActionScript 3.0. Here, you will find a massive index of ActionScript 2.0 code and learn how to implement the same code in ActionScript 3.0.
