When i make symbols it glitches out

Whenever I make a symbol, the thing I make the symbol of dissapears and the scene turns with inside the symbol. Idk what I did or how to fix it.

open animate

draw a rectangle 

right click the rectangle 

click convert to movieclip

A while after it stopped, it started happening again and I try making it a movie clip and doesn't work anymore
