Just got a new Dell PC with Windows 11. The external mic won't work on it. I only can record myself with built in mic. I did not have this problem with my old PC, which had W10.
Can anyone give me advice on this?

Sorry. I am using Adobe Audition 1.5. While installing I believe I got some message that this edition of AA 1.5 wasn't compatible(or something like that) with my edition of Windows....Windows 11. Might this be the cause of the problem?

Audition 1.5 was released 18 years ago and was not meant to run on Windows 11, however if it ran on Windows 10, you might be able to run it on Windows 11.
I'm going to move this to the Audition forum.

As far as I'm aware, the situation is the same as it is on Windows 10 - you need to alter the security settings for the external mic input. The fact that it works with the internal mic indicates that it's not an inherent problem. Have a look at this:

I have AA 1.5 running just fine on Windows 11 including fixing the drag and drop issue and the answer is to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161 no idea why but it just works, also works to fix the drag and drop issue in W10.
I recently installed W11 on Jan 1st on my 2009 PC so it was a complete full format and fresh install so I have been updating drivers and reinstalling programmes, AA 1.5 had been installed and drag and drop did not and would not work as expected.
I began installing another programme that required the 2008 Redistributable which I installed and rebooted.
I then had to do some audio editing so I opened AA 1.5 and instinctively dragged and dropped and it was working and the only thing I updated / installed that day was Winamp and the 2008 Redistributable.

My external mic does not work on my new Dell computer with Windows 11. AA 1.5 worked fine with my external mic on my old computer. Any ideas what the problem is? Is W11 no compatible with AA 1.5?

Two ideas that MAY work to install and/or run old programs in Windows 10 (and MAYBE Windows 11 ?)
-RIGHT click the program icon or EXE and select a compatibility mode in the pop up option window
-and/or select Run as Administrator to assign FULL Windows permissions

Your dreams can still be as new!
That program can still work!
There are a few settings that are application specific to set:
First, in Audition 1.5 with Windows 11, you need to go to Options, Device Properties, and select the appropriate dropdown to your recording use. I switched mine to stereo mix, but you might have to switch yours to your microphone input (*which itself might need: device manager, audio card, properties, sound enabled or allow playback or somethign thing that)
Next, go to the audition program options drop down menu, device properties, device order, and select the appropriate audio device to the top, and you must click on enable EV, to be able to be used in the edit view record.
Lastly, recheck the first two steps to make sure it is still listed right, then on your computer, search (win/s), system, sound, volume mixer, again select the right drop downs for your project.
Or, your computer capabilities can also be better used with the amazing updated converters, bells and whistles using a current and secure Adobe Creative suite subscription at a reasonable rate.
Rock on!

Inhad the same issue with audition 1.5 the work around is to buy a USB dongle adaptor. Plug adapeter to any USB port. Then the mini din audio cable from that dongle, plug it to the audio headphones out.
In audition, gonto device properties. Select Wave In "Microphone (USB Microphone) then you will he set. However you may need a mini audio adapter spliter to connect to external speaker so you can hear the sound. USB adapter i purchase from amazon is brand Digitnow! Good luck
