Adobe Audition 3 (CS2) file saving to mp3 from Edit window

Dear Au3 community - I´ve just encountered a problem during a routine file export not previously experienced.

I mixed a multi-track session to a stereo .wav file and the file automatically opened in the edit window display as it should. I then selected the whole file and clicked the "save as" option. This as all users will know opens a dialogue box where a range of codecs are available and in this instance I wished to save the file to the desktop as an mp3 @ 320kbps.

I highlighted the Fraunhofer mp3 option and to my surprise saw *WAV; mp3 as the codec - when surely it should read .mp3 only. Saving the file resulted as you would expect as a .wav file and not the desired  mp3. I have no idea how this can have happened - my Au3 folder resides on the C drive and the only thing that happens are the usual Microsoft updates - nothing drastic. Would anyone else perhaps have had this problem arise? Would someone who uses the same version of Au3 do me the immense favor of looking at that drop down file extension menu and just check on what it says at the Fraunhofer mp3  line. You´ll see that its option number 14 down the list. My selection showing at this line reads: mp3PRO(FhG)(*wav:*mp3)

I´ve never noticed that before and checked it when my saved file appeared on my desktop as a .wav file!  That´s not supposed to happen!

As Adobe don´t support the purchased disc version anymore, I can´t run a repair installation so am guessing that I might have to delete the Au3 folder and completely re-install from the download link as there appears no way that i can re-run this as I did from the purchased disc installer as before.

No, as Steve says you type the name of the file including the .mp3 suffix into the file name box, not the file type box.

If you do want to re-install AA3 you can save most of your custom settings just by renaming the settings folder to, for instance, '3.0.bak'. When Audition has been reinstalled you can just copy the contents of the 3.0.bak folder into the newly created 3.0 one. you will find the folder at "C:\Users\'Username'\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Audition\3.0".

Just type the full extension name on the file you're trying to save, and it should default to the correct version next time you use it. So that would be something like Myfile.mp3 rather than just Myfile, and leaving the system to sort it out (or not...)

Unfortunately  I am unable to type into the window (Fraunhofer box) or over the designated file description when I choose the option "save as .mp3." It seems the file extension name is rigid in that box and cannot be overwritten  - I tried to do this actually as it was my first immediate action as a hopeful remedy but its just not possible! It reads as an immutable: mp3PRO(FhG)(*wav:*mp3)

Adobe Au3 (CS2) is in my opinion one of the the most amazing DAWs ever created - the user interface is by far the best I ever seen hands down, and I´ve looked at most other DAWs - nothing compares to Au3! For this reason I will use it for life - I can´t praise it enough. So this is why its so important to me that it functions correctly. I´d move on to the latest Audition version but it lacks some of the important features of the earlier CS2 iteration and even worse, the latest version is only available to rent monthly as part of the Adobe Creative package - this is not a wise move by Adobe in my opinion.

I purchased the product with original x 2 discs but sadly its been abandoned by Adobe now and I had to use the download link to re-activate. Formerly using the discs it was possible to repair the installation and this always cured any bugs that may have cropped up from time to time. Now I don´t see how I could do that. Re-installing seems to be the only solution from the d/load link but if I do this will I lose all my EQ and favorite settings - or are all these saved safely along with my session files?

PS: I successfully installed the 3.01 Au3 patch and after opening Au3, the Fraunhofer mp3 option has reverted back to its correct format! mp3PRO(FhG)(.mp3) So I can only assume that the software needed the patch to run correctly. All my VST´s are present, no problems there.

While I´m here might anyone know of a way to enable more precise increments when using the automation lane nodules? Thanks to ryclark and SteveG for your helpful replies.


Glad that you are back to working OK.

Unfortunately there isn't anyway that I know of to move the automation in more precis increments. What increments do you see when you move a key frame point? If you are zoomed into a decent track height you may find it easier. I can move in .1dB increments when I move the mouse in the upper part of the level range in my installation of AA3.
