Audition Automation Issues

I'm trying to write automation in Audition. I have a session that I have been working on, but now all my automation selections are in red and won't let me do any automation besides read. Does anyone know why this is happing or how to fix it?

High, Steve. Though you haven't gotten a response from jadam, I have the EXACT same issue. All of the automation options are red and it is stuck in "Read" mode despite switching to Write or Touch. Here is a screen grab of my own.

Initially the most obvious thing to check is the status of the automation system for the parameter you're trying to automate. If you twirl down to the envelope concerned, there are some controls for what happens. The particular one to look at is the one I've ringed in red:
