Behringer X-Touch Mini Support in Audition and Premiere Pro

I got my new X-Touch Mini today, and I have to say that I'm very disappointed with how little support Audition and Premiere Pro have for it. For instance, support is limited to Mackie Control (MC) mode, the encoder knobs are limited to panning, and the buttons to their default functions, some of which don't work.

This device is relatively inexpensive and is extremely popular with Lightroom Classic users (using the midi2lr plugin).  It is unfortunate that the developers couldn't invest a little bit of time to make this device awesome in Audition and Premiere Pro by creating one or more maps for it to make this and other control surfaces as useful as possible.

Capture One, for instance, supports full MIDI mapping so you can easily map the controls to any function in their software.

In case it helps someone save time figuring it all out, here's my MIDI map for the Behringer X-Touch Mini. You'll want to copy this into a text editor so that the tabs will render correctly (or download the attached text file). Apply the settings using the X-Touch Editor software (download from https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=P0B3M).

I used a couple of Mackie Control/MIDI tables that I found online, and also used the MIDI Monitor window in Presonus Studio One to view the command

I recently purchased the X-Touch Extender. Kyle with Behringer support kindly pointed out the Bank Left and Bank Right commands (A#2,B2). The Mini transposes its notes up an octave, so I programmed it with A#1,B1 instead. I confirmed that Audition does the bank change correctly (though it populates the Mini with the right 8 channels as it considers it a full MC control surface).

Here's the full list (612 items!!! Did I mention that I have tendonitis? *ouch*) of functions available in Adobe Audition to which you can map the 20 recognized Mackie Control buttons. I faithfully transcribed these from screenshots of each page within the Control Surface Button Assignment dialog window.

For those that are curious, below is the map for Behringer X-Touch Mini's default MIDI mode layers and their Mackie Control functions. Conclusion: at the very least, you'll need to change the channels to 1 and remap your encoder turns to make them useful.

MIDI Map for Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro
X-Touch Mini - MIDI Mode (DEFAULT SETTINGS + Channel 1)

CHANGE LOG:
	- 20200920 - Created map from available documentation

HOW TO:
These are the effective settings if you put you X-Touch Mini into MIDI mode. By default, it is set to use channel 11 which Audition does not listen for. You'll need to at least change all controls to channel 1 for it to do anything at all. Manually enter these settings using X-Touch Editor. Set Audition and Premiere Pro to use Mackie Control (MC), but leave your device in MIDI mode. Map the Button Assignments as desired.

Here's a list of the defaults (after changing to channel 1) and how Audition would react to them.

The X-Touch Mini transposes up one octave, so it sends out a note an octave up from what you program in. So, for example, if you have a button programmed to send A1 ("Vpot switch 2"), it actually sends out A2 ("Assign dynamics").

Observations:
With this default map, the encoders will be useless, except for 6-8 on layer b (PAN 1-3).

In case it helps anyone out, I'll share my humble paper template that I use to record the MC functions that I've mapped to my X-Touch Mini.

Well, since the forum won't let me attach files via the edit function anymore, here's the map worksheet that I mentioned in the previous post:

This is pretty incredible what you have provided here. I just received my Behringer X-Touch Mini and am looking to use it in all kinds of programs (and one of them is Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro). Super excited! I'll write more if I need help or have other findings that may benefit others.

Reposting to this thread....

This is an embarrassing question, but I just want to confirm something before I buy an X Touch Mini. I've used a Red Rover for years as an external control surface, but AA no longer allows for remapping of the buttons. At a minimum I need a button to serve as Undo (to discard the last take, basically), and I'd like the ability to skip forward and backward by marker, to drop in new markers, etc. Simple stuff. But now I can't use the Red Rover for this.

Would the X Touch Mini enable me to map these various AA commands to its various buttons without all the custom programming described in this thread? I'm confused as to whether the built-in button mapping options in the standard AA control surface config dialog can be used to do the simple things I want to do. Do I have to do the involved custom coding described here, or is that more for advanced MIDI applications?

Thanks, and sorry this is such a basic question! I've read the full thread and I think it assumes more knowledge than I have.

The X-Touch Mini and Compact come with default programming, but when I was working on this over a year ago, the Mini didn't match up well with Audition and Premiere Pro; I have no experience with the Compact, so perhaps its defaults line up better.

Ultimately, I sold my Mini and upgraded to the X-Touch Universal Control Surface (full size), which worked very reliably, as it is a full reproduction of the Mackie Control Surface and fully matches its capabilities and worked out of the box, with just mapping the the Mackie Control Protocol buttons defined in Audition/Premiere Pro.

Since the Mini and Compact are more DIY devices, you would need to re-program the buttons to make sure they are registering as the MCP signals for which Audition and Premiere Pro are listing. Unfortunately, Adobe has not seen it fit to make MIDI mapping as easy as adjusting keyboard shortcuts.

Jordan, thank you so much for this. I have the unit now (assuming it powers up - UPS left it sitting in a rain storm) and wil download your stuff this morning. I have no doubt you've shortened the path to success. 😉

Just to close the loop, I finally abandoned the Behringer in favor of an iPad app, One Control, that is getting the job done fine. Jordan's research and key mappings were invaluable in helping me configure a One Touch virtual control surface, so again, Jordan, thank you!

If anyone wants to go that route I would be happy to post more details.
