Help! I have been working for over 18 hours on a podcast episode, and am now unable to open the file due to this error message I am receiving. I have been working with Adobe Audition for over 2 years and have never encountered this issue before. I am terrified that all my hard work is lost. Any advice you can graciously provide would be deep;y, deeply appreciated by me and my team!!!!

I didnt do any updates overnight or anything, and there was no apparent program crash. The error message is:

"The Byte Stream Type of the given URL is unsupported."

Well, that refers to a URL where it's been saved, and that looks like OneDrive. Rule 1 of working with original files is NEVER, EVER to store them on remote media. Even if this isn't the original recordings, it's still the first generation original edit and you should only be storing a copy of it remotely - you should always work from a local version, save it as a local version, and then save a copy to OneDrive.

The only thing I can suggest is that you don't try opening the file directly using Audition, but instead download it to a local drive, and try oping it from there. If that doesn't work, then I'm afraid that you've just learned something the hard way...

Hello, thank you very much for your detailed and helpful reply! I will give your suggestion a try.

I am not very knowledgeable on this area (or what one drive really is) but what I'm understanding is that I should save it so that it doesn't say "one drive" in the file URL next time? Like "my pc" instead or something?

Thank you very much for your time!

Basically, yes. OneDrive is remote backup location connected to your computer by a bit of wet string, AKA The Internet. As such, your connection to it is flaky at best - mainly because even though your local bit seems to be okay, you have no idea at all where your stuff is, or what circuitous route it may have to take to get back to you. And relying on external backups has failed for a lot of people. So the rule is - you keep all originals stored locally, and only use remote storage as a backup.

One of the major problems that people encounter is that programs like Audition expect to be able to open files with a reasonable degree of alacrity - and the way that handshaking works when it comes to downloading from remote locations is very much a movable feast. You get used to it working and that's fine - until it fails, which it certainly will. So the idea is that you download your file not by using Audition, but using a 'normal' (non-audio) protocol into a local directory and opening it from there. That way Audition stands a much better chance of successfully opening it.

Hi there,

I am a new user of Adobe Audition and I ran into the same error. However, my project and the files inside it were all saved onto my computer.

For some reason, I have both Audition 2023 and 2024 on my computer, but neither of them open it. Could this possibly be related? Or do you have any other ideas as to what went wrong?

It'd be nice to be able to recover this project, but at the very least I'd like to know what I did in order to avoid the issue in the future.

Thank you!

Since that's an .sesx file, I think you need Suite Spot to have a look at it...
