Can't save files, in "alert state"

Well, I'm now also in an alert state...I have been trying to work on my large multi-track podcast episode file, and not only does it keep crashing, it loses the work that i've done, and now that I thought I had it on track, it won't Save All or Save. So I'm halting work until I can figure this out....

All my files are stored on a Thunderbolt drive, which is huge. Those are my sessions, clips, source files, etc.

Previously, I used Creative Cloud to save backups, and those Temp files, which are big for me (min 1gig each). But then I ran out of my 20gig, and nothing was saving, which I thought was the problem.

So then I changed my Temp / backups save spot to my Google Drive, which has lots of space. And that seems to be when things started to go funny.

It takes a while to get those big AEM files up there, the Temp ones you can't open and can only see when you go online to CC.

Now, tonight I went to Save All and Save my session, and it wouldn't let me. It told me that my files were in "alert state"...and then it had the "Waiting" icon in my Files panel.

So now before I do more work I'm trying to sort this one out. These are all files that are already in my Imported Files folder, next to the session folder.

I'm stumped! Not to mention frustrated....any thoughts?

My hunch is it's about Disk Cache and backups, but can't figure out the right solution and nervous to fiddle...

thx

sam

I would always be suspicious about using any remote backup destination for saving any of Audition's temp, backup, autosave etc. files, even local network drives can cause problems. Since Audition's primary objective is to move audio files backwards and forwards quickly in order to play them fast local drives are necessary. If any Audition background task such as Auosave has a problem with it's connection for any reason it will hang the operation of Audition and can cause file corruption.

So my advice is to always use local computer attached drives whilst you are working with Audition and only use remote drives to backup files after the session has ended.

Hi Ry, thanks for this...I figured this was the problem, but I wasn't sure if I could change it mid-edit. I went in and deleted some big temp files in the Creative Cloud (I had a chat with the CC folks and she said that it was safe to do this, hope that's true!). And now there's plenty of space available.

And so now I'm debating whether or not to lose the work I did last night and re-boot Audition, and see if it will resolve the issue. When you change your settings it gives you a reminder that it won't take effect until the next time you restart the program.

I was really trying to preserve this work, but it doesn't seem to be allowing to resolve it. I tried doing a Copy (Control C) of the work that I did to see if it holds it on the clipboard for me....long shot, but worth it.

Any last thoughts before I give up on those 6 hours of work?!

Will it still not allow you to Save the session and it's contents? Looking in the folder where your session is saved what is the date/time stamp on the last saved .sesx file and any other files that you can find there? Does it still say that your files are in the alert state? Does Audition allow you to switch to the Waveform view? Does anything still function in Audition if you click on things on it's screen or is it completely hung? If it is completely hung then, I'm afraid, you have no option but to force Audition to close and you may well lose some work.

You could possibly try opening another new iteration of Audition and try loading your session into that before you trash the crashed one.
