Question

changing volume/doing fades in waveform window don't hold

Changed from DP and Logic to Audition last year.  I do VO, so just editing my own voice usually.

When I have a sound that I'd like to lower the volume on, like a slight whistle on an 'S' sound... or a remnant on the back side of a fricative like a 'T' or 'K' that I'd like to fade hard... the volume reduction seems selective, as parts of the waveform in the selected area pop back up to where they were - ignoring the command I just gave it.

Same type of thing happens when I do the fades... it often doesn't want to fade the area right at the start or end of the fade, and leaves a bump of audio right when it should be just about at zero.

When I made those kind of waveform adjustments on my old platforms, it just kind of did what I wanted... this not so much.

Am I missing some setting.  Any help greatly appreciated, because this little thing is costing me a bunch of time.

Thanks

Audition normally does what you want it to and should keep any adjustments that you make to the waveform. Are you applying these changes in the Waveform or Multitrack view? What commands are you using to do the level changes, there are so many possibilities in Audition. Can you post a screen shot of what you are trying to do.

Thanks for your reply...

This is editing in the waveform window - in this first image, I've highlighted the area I want to bring down.

The 2nd image is after I use the volume knob to knock this 'section' down by 7db.

As you can see, the middle of the selected area comes down, but the edges stay nearly where they were.

For fades in waveform, I use the shortcut I set up using the 'Favorites' panel (command-D or F)

Often, when I highlight a remnant and select 'Silence' from the right-click dropdown... it only drops the volume on the selection.

(Most times, when I use 'Silence', it does wipe the section clean.)

So, it's kind of an array of oddities within the waveform window.

This is relatively simple to explain, considering the timing indicated on your waveform:

In your preferences folder, you'll find the two settings at the top. They are set like this quite deliberately, to prevent ultra-rapid transitions appearing like 'clicks'. I suspect that the first one is affecting the fade transitions you are making. You can experiment with reducing them, but don't be too surprised if this causes transition difficulties with other edits.

Thanks... I'll check this out.

I saw these prefs, but thought they would apply to 2 sides of an actual excised section, rather than the 'boundaries' of a simple volume adjustment...

I'll let you know what happens.
