Classic Soft Knee and Breaths

New Here ,
Jun 19, 2018 Jun 19, 2018

Good morning,

I like to use the "Classic Soft Knee" pre-set when producing voice for radio commercials.  However, the setting seems to heavily accentuate the talents' breathing between lines.  I find myself going thru the recording and lowering the volume on each breath.  Anyone know of a setting I can change or add to either eliminate the necessity or automate this task?

Thanks much!

Mac

The way that the Classic Soft Knee is set up inevitably boosts everything below the knee point, which is relatively high. It's a pretty smooth curve though, and there really isn't much point in mucking about with that; you'll probably make things worse.

What might be worth experimenting with though is, on the 'settings' tab, the release times of the level detector or gain processor, or even both. It's a moot point as to which way you should go; there are arguments in both directions, and the dynamics processor has never been exactly an intuitive device, so you'll have to experiment. Chances are that you will at least be able to make an improvement.

Let us know how you get on!
