Is there a way to delete silences in batch? I have hundreds of files for which I need to delete leading and trailing silences. The diagnostic delete silence works great on individual files, but I cannot find a way to do something similar on a large number of files (without using a different product like audacity)

There is if you can define the lengths of the silences, but not if these lengths are variable across your files, as Diagnostics isn't a supported effect.
But for fixed lengths, you can create a favorite that will delete silence from both ends of a file (info can be provided if it's not obvious) and that can be applied within a batch file.

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately, the lengths of the silences are random. I have been pre-processing files for a few years with Audacity to work around the Audition limitation. I would have hoped that Audition would have closed that gap by now and I am surprised it does not.

Unfortunately there has never been any effort made to rectify the multiple shortcomings in the Favorites system, despite repeated requests. What it looks very much like is that the big-ticket users have no real use for any improvements to that feature, so it's a lot further down the list of priorities - if it's on there at all, that is. Unfortunate, but that's a commercial reality.
