Divide long mp3

HI.   I have an mp3 file with 20 songs back to back with no gaps or spaces.   All of the tracks slightly overlap each other to eliminate the gaps and for a smooth transition.   Can I use Audition to place "things"  (sorry I don't know what the terminology is) where each track starts?   I then want to save the whole mp3 file (again as one continuous  file) to play in the car but I want to be able to see what is playing.   Even if it says  track 1, track 2, track 3 etc, that will be a big help.   The only help I can find on the web splits the file into individual tracks when saved.   At the moment when i play the file it says "track 1" for the duration of all 20 songs.   Cheers

Basically, no, I'm afraid you can't. Nothing to do with Audition as such, but the MP3 format. It doesn't allow markers (aka 'things'...) to be placed along the length of a track at all. This is why, when it's been used as a Talking Book format, it has to be modified (into something like DAISY or one of the other modified formats) in order for any form of indexing for chapters to take place. And even if you could get it coded like that, your car player wouldn't read the markers anyway... ID3 markers can only apply to a single track.

On top of that, if you use Audition to split up an MP3 and re-encode it, you lose quality - simply because MP3 isn't a lossless format and as such can have very little done to it without decoding it. And the re-encode afterwards will be where you lose even more quality, because you're increasing the level of masking. If you do this a couple of times, then everything starts to sound sort-of 'plastic-like', and not very pleasant at all.

Also since all the tracks overlap a bit to smooth the change you won't be able to split the audio into separate clips either I'm afraid.
