Echo in Podcast

New Here ,
Mar 30, 2019 Mar 30, 2019

I cannot believe using Audition should be this difficult.  Thousands of people use Audition to create Podcasts. I have been at this for hours with no success,

I just cannot believe this program is this big an pain in the butt.

But now it's worse.

My initial sound test worked fine.  Then I did something--I genuinely no idea what--and now all my recordings have an echo. It's as if I am recording on two microphones.

I went into Windows to make sure I was recording on the Rode mic and not the internal mic.  I was.

I went into Audition to make sure my input was, again, the Rode mic. It was.

Short of rebooting, I have redone every step and the echo is still there.

Any help on this issue?  I cannot  believe I am the only person who has encountered this problem.

Thanks in advance to anyone or ones who can solve this mystery.

Need to know a lot more about your workflow in order to be able to diagnose the problem. Is the Rode mic a USB or XLR connected one? If XLR what audio interface are you using to get it's signal into your computer? How are you monitoring Audition's output? Are you recording in the Multitrack view and if so are you using any effects on the Track?

This is very likely to happen if you have so-called 'smart monitoring' turned on. It accidentally got turned on by default in CC2018, but it's by no means impossible to do this to yourself in any release, before or subsequent. There's an FAQ here: I'm getting strange feedback and monitoring issues with the Audition 2018 release - can I fix this?

(1) USB

(2) Not sure what you mean about "monitoring Audition's output".  I either listen through my headphones or my speakers.  The echo is in the recording, not the headphones or speakers.

(3) I'm in Podcast multi-track view. No effects.

It's as if I'm recording on two microphones.  I can't believe I'm the first to have this problem.

TY.

Are you using the Podcast template? If you are, the fix for this is to scrap that session, and start again with the default one. The Podcast template is going to mislead you so far, it's almost not true. I'm not sure why it's included - for beginners especially it's a disaster that's found somewhere to happen.

I can't believe I'm the first to have this problem.

If you're using the Podcast template, then you most certainly aren't...

I am using the template.

I appreciate your thinking, but I can't waste any more time on this software.

Audition is great, I'm sure, for someone or maybe it's designed for experienced professionals.

I just need something to work right out of the box.  If I can't even get to square one in making a recording without having to go to the help forum, something is seriously wrong.

Thanks again.

I've watched several, including the Audition one in the help section.  I appreciate the suggestion, but I find this program is a bit like using a missile when a fly-swatter would have done fine.  Plus, I find the interface crowded and difficult to maneuver around, too many buttons to click before you can actually record (at least in the podcast mode) and the whole program very, well, un-intuitive. It took me a while to figure out just how to delete prior tracks!  One person wrote that it was better to not use the podcast template at all but to just learn how to use the record and edit functions on the program and create the podcast that way.

Well, that tells me right off the bat that this isn't the program for me, at least not at this stage.  I just need a program more designed for podcasts with a simple interface and is fairly intuitive to use with clearly market buttons as to functions. I've used record and edit software in the past. Granted it was for very simple projects and I did not need fades or multi track, but you didn't need to be a sound engineer to use the software and it was pretty much record and play. I found the program Hindenburg Journalist which is better designed for voice recording and interview style recording.  It doesn't have every bell and whistle under the sun, but it has a clear interface, common sense editing buttons and functions, and to record you just click on the record button.

What a concept.
