How can I easily extract vocals from a song using the instrumental version?

I've been having trouble with fully extracting vocals from a song and I was wondering if there was a simple way to do this since I have the official instrumental version of the track? Is there a way to just take the two songs and remove the content that is same between the two to just be left with the vocals?

if they are the exact same speed/amplitude down to the sample level, then set both as mono in a stereo track and invert one. then combine stereo to a mono. it will merge them by phase cancellation.

But this will only work if you have original .wav versions of the track. All bets are off if you only have compressed audio like .mp3 to work with.
